“The less I know the more I learn.” — The Revivalists
Keeping an open mind wasn’t always easy. A lot of us came in to AA as a know-it-all, interrupting, talking over people, not listening, waiting for our turn to talk. That mentality used to include the idea of how to drink without wrecking our lives. Meanwhile people were telling us to slow down. Then, after nothing we tried worked, we finally started listening to people in AA. The more we stopped comparing, and tried to relate, the more they'd make sense. We don’t have to believe everything we hear, but we can stay open-minded. When we keep an open mind, we stop falling into the same old traps that keep us stuck. The second we think we’ve got this all figured out, we start slipping backward.
What’s one thing you’ve learned by listening to someone different from you?
