The Quiet Voice

November 1 – The Quiet Voice

“You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.” — Kenny Rogers

I heard in a meeting that prayer is talking to God, and meditation is shutting up long enough to listen. I like that. I’ve spent most of my life trying to negotiate with the universe, like I could bargain my way into peace. Step 11 isn’t about getting what I want — it’s about staying quiet enough to find out what I already have.

There’s this quiet voice that usually kicks in right before I do something stupid. It doesn’t shout, it doesn’t argue — it just drops one calm warning and walks away. I only hear it once. Some days I pray for God to turn up the volume on that voice. God shows up like a gentleman — invited, not forced. Usually I have to pause and not do anything until the answer is very clear to me. It’ll come, as long as my own house is in order.

The trick, for me, is learning to listen before the noise starts again.

When’s the last time that quiet voice showed up for you — and did you listen, or did you argue with it?
